Who we are

The seminar came into existence over 40 years ago, after representatives from police and fire departments contacted (retired) Criminal Justice Professor Thomas Hammond at Saint Anselm College and asked for help in organizing an event dealing with arson investigation. Since then, the seminar has expanded its original charge and examines fires beyond those which may have been intentionally set. It is known as the New England Fire Investigation Seminar. As the oldest continually-run fire investigation seminar in this country, NE FIRE has provided training for over 3000 public safety officials throughout New England.

Today, the seminar is run by a committee of volunteers who represent the varied backgrounds of public safety and education. Consisting of active and retired members from police departments, fire departments and Saint Anselm College, the committee's goal is to bring pertinant and varied training to their peers.

Additionally, the seminar helps fund the Public Safety Scholarship at Saint Anselm College which is available for the children of New England Public Safety officials. Information can be obtained through the Office of Financial Aid at the College

Quality Education

Combining classroom lecture with hands-on training, the New England Fire Investigation Seminar is a unique opportunity to gain practical experiance as well as theoretical knowledge. The annual week long seminar provides attendees with the most current developments in fire science, as well as reinforcing foundational principles. Instructors include nationally recognized experts and local authorities from throughout New England. This is a networking opportunity that should not be missed.

Our 2024 seminar will be the 44th Annual New England Fire Investigation Seminar and will run from May 20 to May 24 at Saint Anselm College.

The theme of this year's seminar is "Back to the Source: Understanding Fire Growth and Spread". As one of the three pillars of origin determination, fire dynamics doesn't always get the attention it deserves. This year we have expanded the practicals and demonstrations, as well as designed an exercise which will allow participants to take a unique hands-on approach to their fire scenes, all in an effort to more fully appreciate and understand this underutilized aspect of fire science. Get ready to play with fire!

We also have a schedule of topics to include interviewing, NFPA fire investigation code changes and updates and 3D documentation. This year we are excited to welcome expert instructors from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Envista Forensics and Fire Sequence Investigations LLC.

This seminar is worth ten (10) tested points toward application or re-certification for International Association of Arson Investigator credentials.
